Although a number of people have been known to misuse benefit funds by incorrect claims, which can be found in the newspapers and local media all the time, it is vital that the proper claimants can contact ESA and use our services. This is not the time to go into the politics of the situation.

You can also claim for the benefit over the phone. The ESA Telephone Number for Universal Credit live service is 0345 600 0723, but for full service the ESA Telephone Number is 0345 600 4272. (Note that you can contact your Job Centre if you want to find out if your area works on a live service or full service. You can also use the ESA helpline referred to above.) Note that an 0345 ESA Number is classed as a UK-wide number and cost up to 9p on a landline and between 3p and 55p on a mobile per minute (depending on the mobile phone operator you use).
Alternatively, if you wish to obtain ESA support you can contact your local Job Centre Plus office or phone their helpline. You also can gain ESA support at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Their advice will be completely impartial and not connected with Job Seekers Plus or the Department of Works and Pensions, indeed no governmental department.
Complaints should also be directed to your local Jobcentre Plus. Please note that there is no specific number to deal with complaints regarding the Employment and Support Allowance. Note that a complaint is different from an appeal. To clarify, any inability to use our services or a notice of any prejudice would warrant a complaint. A desire to overturn a decision made by ESA would require an appeal. Decisions against medical practitioners (the medical test is performed by medical practitioners) might be hard to reverse, but you are always free to try.
If you think a decision made by us is wrong, you can contact the Job Centre Plus for its reasons. If you want to appeal on the decision (also known as a mandatory reconsideration) this is perfectly within your rights.
Note that you can also appeal to tribunal if you feel the decision we have made is wrong. Note, however, that there is a time limit for which you should act. You are forbidden to act on your appeal outside of this limit. For most benefits this time period is usually a month, though it currently doesn't apply for this specific benefit. Again contacting Citizen Advice is a good idea should you wish to appeal. Alternatively you can ask a family member, friend or lawyer to appeal on behalf of you.
If you unhappy with the tribunal can still appeal to the upper tribunal, also known as the Administrative Appeals Chamber. Alternatively you can get a decision "set aside" or nullified if you think a mistake has been made. We understand it can be complicated to differentiate between these two procedures. Contact your CAB or solicitor for further details. Again we apologise that we can't interpret individual cases or claims. However the ESA support is always there.
Note that all tribunals have to follow the rules laid down in Tribunal Procedure 2008.
